Paws in the Sand: Your Guide to Pet-Friendly Vacations on the Crystal Coast
Sandy paws, salty air, and plenty of new places to explore! The Crystal Coast is a wonderful place to vacation with your four-legged family members. From long walks along the shoreline to waterfront dining and outdoor adventures, there are plenty of ways to include your dog in the fun.
Whether you're staying in Atlantic Beach, Pine Knoll Shores, or one of our neighboring beach communities, here's everything you need to know about planning a pet-friendly getaway.
Are Dogs Allowed on Crystal Coast Beaches?Good news! Dogs are welcome on many of the Crystal Coast's beautiful beaches throughout the year. Just remember that leash requirements and certain restrictions vary by town.
- Atlantic Beach: Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round when leashed. However, seasonal restrictions apply to The Circle and another designated beach area from the Friday before Easter through Labor Day. During this period, dogs are permitted in these restricted areas between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Leashed pets may also pass through these areas within 20 feet of the water's edge. Other sections of Atlantic Beach remain dog-friendly throughout the day. See the Town of Atlantic Beach's animal regulations for details.
- Pine Knoll Shores: Leashed dogs are welcome on the beach year-round, with leashes no longer than 16 feet.
- Indian Beach: Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round when leashed.
- Emerald Isle: Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round on leashes no longer than 20 feet.
Wherever you go, bring waste bags, keep your dog under control, and be mindful of other beachgoers and local wildlife. Early mornings and evenings are especially enjoyable for beach walks, when the sand is cooler and the shoreline is a little quieter.
More Pet-Friendly Things to Do on the Crystal CoastThe beach is just the beginning! There are plenty of places to explore with your pup beyond the shoreline.
Explore Fort Macon State ParkLocated at the eastern end of Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon State Park offers beautiful coastal scenery, walking opportunities, and views of the ocean and Beaufort Inlet.
Leashed dogs are welcome in permitted outdoor areas, including trails and portions of the beach. Pets are not permitted inside the historic fort buildings or designated swimming areas.
Stroll Along the Beaufort WaterfrontTake a leisurely walk through historic downtown Beaufort, where you'll find charming coastal architecture, waterfront views, and plenty of interesting sights and smells for your pup. Front Street is a lovely place to wander, watch the boats, and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this historic seaside town.
Take a Trip to Cape Lookout National SeashoreLooking for a little adventure? Cape Lookout National Seashore welcomes leashed dogs on its beaches, making it a memorable destination for exploring undeveloped shoreline.
You'll need to travel by boat, so be sure to check with your ferry operator about pet policies before making plans. Dogs must remain on leashes no longer than six feet.
Enjoy a Scenic Walk Around TownSometimes the simplest activities are the best. Explore the quieter residential streets of Pine Knoll Shores, enjoy a morning walk along the waterfront in Morehead City, or find a shady spot to relax together after a day of exploring.

Tips for a Tail-Wagging Beach VacationA little preparation makes traveling with your dog even more enjoyable.
- Pack the essentials. Bring your dog's leash, waste bags, favorite toys, food, and a portable water bowl.
- Protect those paws. Beach sand and pavement can get hot during summer afternoons. Plan walks for cooler parts of the day.
- Provide plenty of fresh water. Keep your dog hydrated and discourage drinking saltwater.
- Respect wildlife. Keep dogs away from shorebirds, sea turtle nests, and protected dune areas.
- Choose the right vacation rental. Check pet policies, fees, and any size or number restrictions before booking.
